Well I was inspired to write this after Gene Lightfoot’s Journal about the process of making my OC Sprite.
Honestly it all started in English class junior year. I had a childhood OC based off of the Batman family (more specifically Nightwing) Named Silverwing. But looking back he was extremely embarrassing. I had been searching for something that fit but nothing had until I read “Rape of the Lock,” the Girl in the picture of the story was protected by small angels called a sprite. My family is very religious and I have always been found of angels, and truth be told I’m considerably short (5’6). These tiny angels stayed on my mind until I sat down and drew (badly might I add) him out on paper.
I went through many designs but settled on the one that he wears today. Next was his powers, I wanted him to fly but I had trouble deciding on what method of flight. I went through traditional wings, but I quickly decided that that choice wasn’t the right fit. Then I decided to be a little more original and thought about force repulsion. Basically the idea was that anything that touches (bullets, energy, gravity, etc.) it repelled back with twice the force.
But I missed the angel concept, so I decided to make the wings out of energy and I researched angel stories to base his powers off of. I came up with his current powers. I wanted him to have magic but I wasn’t certain on how I wanted him to access his magic. It was only when I heard the saying “Latin is the closest language to God,” in history class that made me decide to make him speak in Latin for his magic.
On top of the angel concept that I based him off of, I wanted him to be very spiritual, NOT RELIGEOUS! I wanted him to be connected to a, or rather “The Deity,” because I didn’t want any denomination confining him. That and personally I believe religion is just another form to control people.
Ultimately I think Sprite is based off of my ideals of how I would be, and be perceived as. He’s everything I want to be, giving, caring, healing, innocent, and selfless.
Syphon was based solely on my attractions and what my ideal man would be; caring, stable, dependable, compassionate, and loving. I am also a VERY big fan of hung, manly, versatile/power bottoms, which is why I made Syphon a verse bottom.
His back story was fun and I wanted him to be a warrior so I sat down and wrote out a few possibilities and picked the one I liked the most!
Temper is a character that I created when I was going through a rough time. For a few months I couldn’t relate to Sprite and a lot of things in my life were less than desirable. Where Sprite is based off of my “Best-Self,” Temper was based off of my flawed self.
Not many of you know that I’m bipolar and I’ve struggled with mood swings often. I’m a Happy/Sad Bipolar and so most of the time people think I’m just a happy ADHD person. But during the depressive stages I can be very gloomy. Iceman is my favorite Marvel hero and I’ve ALWAYS loved Kryokinetics, so I wanted Temper to have some ice powers. I also wanted to play off of Bipolar disorder; I haven’t liked the few comic book characters that I’ve seen with Bipolar disorder so I wanted to make one that fit me.
While Temper is in a normal, stable state he’s completely normal, but if he’s manic-depressive his whole body turns to ice and he has organic-ice powers. When he’s upset or angry the opposite happens and he’s a living flame. He has no control on this without harmful, stunting medicines. Once he’s in that mood he cannot change his physical form back until he regulates. His name is also a play on his temperature powers and his radical mood swings. I’ve kept him hidden until now cause I’m not sure if I want to make him smutty or not XD.
So there is my process what about yours?
